About City Merchant

Established in 1988, City Merchant was extended and upgraded in 1996, offering an extensive variety of local and exotic fish and shellfish.

City Merchant is situated a 5 minute walk from George Square and only a few hundred yards from Glasgow’s original dwellings on the Clyde. Prosperous merchants of the 17th and 18th centuries built their mansions in what is now known as Glasgow’s Merchant City. As time passed, they moved to the more fashionable suburbs and the west end.

city-merchantThe City Fathers then developed their fish and fruit markets, and of course warehouses and manufacturing businesses prospered as well as inns and howffs – some of notorious ill-repute!

As traffic congestion and noise increased these businesses moved out-with the city centre and so today we find the Merchant City buoyant with clubs, pubs, bistros and restaurants of all kind.

The City Merchant restaurant can accommodate 120 persons on the ground floor and mezzanine. VIP areas can be taken over by groups of 12 – 45 persons. Lunch/Pre-Theatre, a la Carte menus as well as a blackboard ‘Fish Market Extras’ are on offer. Corporate menu priced from £31.95  for groups or corporate dining are available on request.

City Merchant also caters for private functions. Whether it’s family gathering or a business meeting you’ll enjoy the ambience, service and superb food on offer. Our function room caters up to 45 people and has its own private bar.

All major credit cards are accepted.
